Tonight
we recommend….the PAPA GEORGE BAND Raw and unadulterated blues
The Papa George Band
make a welcome return to the Tawe Delta Blues club after a cracker of
a performance at the venue’s Christmas Party last year.
George’s is a polished act with the emphasis on variety and energy.

Duke
presents George’s brilliant homegrown blues
Expect fireworks and changes of style and pace from the start, with
the likes of Cold Shot and Dust My Broom being given Papa’s own
treatment.
One to listen out for in particular is one of his own, Cleansin’
My Soul, and another, a Hendrix-style version of Oh! Well.
This is clearly a top-class three-piece.

Papa George and Alan Glen are a combination not to be missed…
Papa George demonstrated his own enigmatic style, with awesome slide
guitar, it was such good entertainment value, with each playing to the
other and they created laid back but bustling blues at its best.

Their (PG Band) music reverberates with the sounds of the Deep South
as well as with more contemporary echoes and it is an amalgam that has
taken them to festivals throughout UK, Europe and the US.

The
Papa George Band – Hard Rock Bar
The three-piece Papa George Band is as solid and vibrant as you can
get, turning out hard and raw blues, R&B and boogie rock, with powerful
vocals and masterful guitar.

Big Wheel Festival – Isle of Man
His (Papa George’s) baritone, late nights and maybe a cigarette
too many voice can shake tall buildings and his finger picked resonator
guitars accompany and enhance his songs beautifully. His CDs are first
class…you should definitely make the effort to get hold of one.
Anglin Buttimore, sound engineer, commented on the very high quality
of the songs, the production and music – just like his performance
the night before. Come back soon George.

DEVIZES
FESTIVAL FRINGE BLUES DAY
The stylish Papa George drew the Festival Fringe blues day into the
early evening and demonstrated his skill and ability with the National
Steel Guitar. The sound he produced was at times mesmerising and transformed
the function room of the Lamb Inn into a Deep South Bottleneck blues
bar. Joining Papa George was Alan Glen. It was a mean combination and
one that reflected both men’s passion for the genre.

GEORGE BAND @Tawe Delta, Swansea
…"Dust my Broom" was about the most recognisable lyric
but not done in the Elmore James guitar riff - so refreshing from others
who imitate that opening and possibly most recognisable opening riffs
in the classic Blues guitar annuls! No this was Papa talking now. "Dust
my Broom" soon turned into a sort of medley with "Caledonia"
and back into "Dust my Broom" coming in again at the end.
Woven around this were superb solos by P.G. and lovely interspersions
by Stroud and Kelly…
A spectacular evening. The band loved it by the look of things and the
punters were ecstatic!

Papa
George at the Cartoon, Croydon on Sunday the 27th March 2005
George started in fine form with “Strut”, a funky groove
with a chilled out sound, with a great bass line from Pete and fine
percussive punctuation from Sam. Then George builds up to a crescendo
on guitar with a suffusion of rhythm and melody eliciting solos from
bass and drums. Having suitably warmed up the audience, George and the
band treated them to a feast of excellent music from three very fine
improvisational musicians.

The
Papa George Big Band– Charlie’s. EC3 15/03/05
It was an early start at this City centre venue and the place was packed
with suited and booted city types all expecting a good night out and
they were not to be disappointed.
Papa George had dressed for the occasion and was resplendent in a dazzling
white suit set off by a black Derby. We don’t have to wait long
for one of George’s trademark, blistering guitar solos, the opening
number, Taj Mahal’s “Strut” provided the perfect opportunity.
The addition of Frank Mead on sax to the line-up added a bit of NOLA
style funk to the total sound. George switched to his custom made Dobro
for Little Walter’s “Blues With A Feeling” (NB It
was actually Papa’s “Blues With A Feelin’), providing
the perfect excuse for Frank to get out his harp.
No Papa George set could be complete without a superbly executed tribute
to SRV, This time it was WC Clark/Mike Kindred’s “Cold Shot”.
George is, of course, a wonderful songwriter in his own right and a
few of his compositions were showcased here.

GEORGE BAND
Papa George is a true picture of the man with the blues, with his pinstriped
suit and Strat in hand, bringing in next, the favourite, “Blackjack”.
His guitar sound is what a Fender Stratocaster is all about. He made
it sing on, “Cleansin’ My Soul”, a new soulful blues
number.

George then slowed the tempo with a new song “Forever Blue”,
an almost jazz-inspired song with some clever diminished chord changes
and some solid backing from Pete Rees and Martin Wild. The rhythm section
really came into its own on the next tune, Stevie Wonder’s “Higher
Ground”, although this arrangement owed more to the Red Hot Chilli
Peppers. Good, solid, uncompromising funky blues from top musicians!

Rocking
the Blues at Tring
The auditorium lights were dimmed, Papa George dressed in a smart dark
suit and hat, and is shiny National Steel guitar being picked out in
the spot light. This resembled a film scene from a Chicago club in the
1930s. Papa George played a mixture of traditional and self penned songs
from his ” Being Free… ain’t no crime” CD. The
guitar sound was authentic and complemented by Papa George’s deep
blues vocals.
